ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper is to investigate writing and reading that would engage postsecondary students under crisis conditions in which face-to-face peer and teachers' support might not be available. In this project, I am looking at how students can use writing and reading fiction to understand their own experiences in being locked down during the COVID-19 pandemic. Starting with a one-paragraph short story to a fully developed narrative with plot, characterization, theme, and narrative voice, writing assignments lead to a growing realization of how reflection and writing emerge from the body, the mind, and the imagination. Reading a novel, Deafening (2003), by Frances Itani, shows students how a writer links battle scenes from World War I to the flu epidemic on the home front. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021. Postconcussion syndrome is a devastating condition of the mind, body, and even personality. Mounting research demonstrates that heart rate variability biofeedback can help the concussed individual in three critical ways: (a) eliciting high amplitude oscillations in cardiovascular functions and thereby strengthening self-regulatory control mechanisms;(b) restoring autonomic balance;and (c) increasing the afferent impulse stream from the baroreceptors to restore balance between inhibitory and excitatory processes in the brain.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: The 90-day double-blind phase (DBP) of the Phase 3 EASE study demonstrated accelerated wound healing for Oleogel-S10 (birch triterpenes) versus control gel in epidermolysis bullosa (EB). Here, we report safety and total wound burden results from the 24-month open-label phase (OLP) in which all patients received treatment with Oleogel-S10. Method(s): Total wound burden was assessed using EB Disease Activity and Scarring Index (EBDASI) and Body Surface Area Percentage (BSAP). Data are reported without visit windows to reflect a realworld situation more accurately, particularly considering the COVID- 19 pandemic. Result(s): The patient population was made up of dystrophic EB (n = 178, 86.8%) and junctional EB (n = 25, 12.2%);71.7% (n = 147) of patients were aged <18 years. 141 patients (68.8%) completed the OLP. The mean (SD) treatment duration for all patients was 584.7 (246.1) days. Adverse events were reported in 77.1% of all patients in the OLP versus 81.7% of those receiving Oleogel-S10 in the DBP. Mean BSAP for patients treated with Oleogel-S10 in the DBP reduced from 12.1% at study entry to 6.1% with 27 months of treatment. Similarly, the mean EBDASI skin activity score in the Oleogel-S10 group improved from 19.6 to 15.1 after 27 months. In addition, reductions in both BSAP and EBDASI from OLP baseline were observed in patients who transitioned from control gel to Oleogel-S10 in the OLP. Discussion(s): These data support a reassuring long-term safety profile of Oleogel-S10. Furthermore, the reduction in wound burden previously reported with 15 months of Oleogel-S10 treatment is maintained to the end of OLP. This is encouraging given the nature of this chronic genetic disorder in which there is regular cycling of patients' fragile wounds.

The context of illness, plagues, and healing in early Christianity and late antiquity was a factor in the growth and expansion of early Christianity. The most prominent early images from early Christian art depict Christ healing. This essay will examine the historical context of plagues and the Christian response to show how the healing Christ affected the security of Christian ascendency. From this study, the essay offers insight into our present pandemic context of COVID-19 and evaluates the religious response.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to investigate the reasons why people visit tombs of people believed to have a religious identity, and to determine the relationship between these visits and sickness in general and COVID-19 in particular. For this study, Joshua's Tomb located in Istanbul was selected. The study was designed in phenomenology. The study group consisted of twenty two visitors who visited Joshua's Tomb between May 26, 2021 and June 04, 2021. Within the scope of ethnological field research, data of the study were collected by directed interviews and natural observation. As a result of content analysis, four themes emerged at the end of the study: "reasons for vising Joshua's Tomb”, "seeking healing at Joshua's Tomb”, "people visiting Joshua's Tomb during the COVID-19 pandemic” and "visitors seeking healing during the COVID-19 pandemic”. Joshua's Tomb draws attention as one of the sacred places and spiritual areas that people turn to for various reasons, especially with the expectation of healing, during the period when the epidemic was intense and people did not prefer to leave their homes, except for essential reasons. © 2023 Cyprus International University. ABSTRACT

This article reinterprets historical works on the history of medicine in South Africa and how present-day Afrikaner home-based healing therapies known as Boererate engage with this history. By reinterpreting historical sources, we illustrate how Boer women in concentration camps during the South African War were waging an ideological war. We argue that there is a distinction between the creolised medicines that Boer women took into the concentration camps and the body of knowledge — Boererate — that emerged from the camps after the women were released. The article brings archival research and interviews with interlocutors into conversation to show how a knowledge system like Boererate has persisted through time and become very popular in online forums and Facebook groups during the Covid-19 pandemic. The article is part of a wider project investigating Boererate in historical and diverse contemporary contexts. The Sanskrit word Ayurveda comprises Science and Knowledge. In simple words, we can say that Ayurveda is the art of living. Medicines can cause hazards to our bodies as well but Ayurveda uses all the natural things for treatment so it is not harmful or dangerous for our bodies. The precise identification of medicinal plants is critical in Ayurvedic medicine. Human specialists use visual characteristics and fragrances to identify plants. Along with leaves flowers and spices are also a vital component in curing diseases. Flowers like lavender, marigold, hibiscus and many more, spices like clove, ginger, cumin, turmeric and so on play crucial role along with their leaves. Covid -19 had very terrible impact on lives of many people. Along with medicines;Ayurveda also played a very important role in curing people. Ayurvedic kadas and many more vanaspatis were used to get rid of this virus, many of the people got rid of this virus at home using home remedies. ABSTRACT

The Siddha system of medicine is an ancient medical lineage that is practiced primarily in the southern part of India. Siddha system of medicine has been in practice for thousands of years with documented evidence dating back to the 6th century BCE. According to siddha system of medicine's basic fundamental principle, the human body is made up of 96 thathuvam (primary components), which encompass physical, physiological, psychological, and intellectual aspects. Medicine (marunthu) is classified as a wide range of internal and external medicines. The major components of its medical formulations include plant parts, minerals and animal products. Various methods were carried out for the purification process to eliminate the toxins. Choornam, Guligai, Tailam, Parpam, Chendooram, Kattu, Pasai and Poochu are the most common medicines used in Siddha system of medicine for the treatment of various diseases. The pathophysiological classification of diseases is elaborated in detail in the classical Siddha literature. Siddha system of medicine plays an important role in protecting people from diseases such as COVID-19 by providing immune-protecting and immune-boosting medicines in today's world. Mathan tailam and maha megarajanga tailam are the two unique preparations used widely for various skin diseases including chronic wounds and burns. Scientific validation of both medicines will help in understanding their effectiveness against a typical wound condition. In the present study physio-chemical and phytochemical, HPTLC, and GC-MS analyses were carried out and discussed in detail on the multifunctional properties exhibited in the patient communities.

ABSTRACT

Research Questions : How do participants with anxiety receiving distance healing using tuning forks, experience healing sessions? What outcomes do they spontaneously report? Theoretical Framework : Modified grounded theory, using single interviews to learn about experiences with distant sound healing. Methodology : Standardized open-ended, qualitative interviews of 30-minute length were conducted after the intervention and analyzed using an inductive and iterative process for identifying themes, categories, and patterns in qualitative data. Context : Single-arm, pilot feasibility study of Biofield Tuning (BT) for anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic delivered at a distance facilitated by Zoom (without video). Sample Selection : A total of 15 participants were recruited to this study: 13 completed all quantitative aspects, and the 12 who completed the interviews are reported here. Data Collection : The 30-minute qualitative interviews were designed to understand the impact of virtual BT sessions on the participant's experience, anxiety, and within the larger context of their life. The Self-Assessment of Change measured subjective shifts pre and post treatment. Analysis and Interpretation : The interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed using otter.ai. Two researchers read all the transcripts, identified key themes within the broader experience of sessions and outcomes categories, and came to consensus on key themes using a qualitative research analysis approach. Main Results : Participants were surprised by the degree to which they felt sensations and heard tuning fork changes. They commented on the accuracy of the healers' perceptions and comprehension of their life experiences. Participants reported positive shifts in perceptions of themselves and their surroundings, both interpersonally and in response to triggers. The patients' own words provide insight into the lived experiences of healing, and guide future research.

ABSTRACT

CONTEXT: During the COVID-19 pandemic medical and holistic health practitioners turned to utilizing virtual healthcare. As energy healing practitioners and educators who shifted to an online format, it seemed important to document descriptions of client experiences of virtual energy healing. OBJECTIVE: To describe client experiences of virtual energy healing sessions. DESIGN: Descriptive pre-post intervention design. SETTING AND INTERVENTIONS: Two experienced and eclectic energy healing practitioners developed a protocol and conducted energy healing sessions via Zoom. PARTICIPANTS: A convenience sample of Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet (CSJ) Consociates, people of diverse life-styles and spiritual traditions who are committed to living the mission of the CSJs in the St. Paul Province. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Pre-post 10-point Likert scale rating of relaxation, well-being, and pain. Pre-post primarily qualitative questionnaires. RESULTS: Results indicated significant pre-post differences: pre-session relaxation (M=5.036, SD = 2.9) and post-session relaxation (M=7.86, SD = 6.4): t(13)=2.16, p=.0017*; pre-session well-being (M=5.86, SD = 4.29); post-session well-being (M=8, SD = 2.31), t(13), p=.0001*; pre-session pain (M=4.0, SD = 6.15) and post-session pain (M=2.25, SD = 3.41), t(13)=2.16, p=.004*. Thematic analysis revealed six themes related to client experiences of virtual energy healing: 1) embodied sensations, 2) relaxation, 3) release - a letting go of tasks/anxieties/worries, 4) sense of peace/joy/calm, 5) connection to themselves, others, and something larger, and 6) surprise that virtual energy healing works. LIMITATIONS: This was a descriptive study using a convenience sample, therefore, there was not a control group, a large sample size, and the sample might be more prone to report better results than the general population because of their spiritual perspectives. Results were not generalizable. IMPLICATIONS: Clients reported positive descriptions of virtual energy healing and say they would do it again. However more research is needed to understand the variables that influenced the results and the underlying mechanisms of action.

ABSTRACT

This book explores globally-informed, culturally-rooted approaches to dialogue in the classroom. It seeks to fill gaps in communication and education literature related to decolonizing dialogue and breaking binaries by decentering Eurocentric perspectives and providing space for dialogic practices grounded in cultural wealth of students and teachers. We first describe the book's genesis, contextualize dialogue within the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and share guiding concepts of inclusion, intersectionality, and authenticity in dialogue and pedagogy. We also distinguish dialogue from other practices and times in which dialogue may not be possible. The book brings fresh and urgent perspectives from authors across different disciplines, including ceramics, religious studies, cultural studies, communication, family therapy, and conflict resolution. ABSTRACT

Background/Aims The Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) identifies patients >50 who have sustained a fragility fracture (FF). These patients need prompt assessment and decision on appropriate treatment for osteoporosis in order to reduce their risk of sustaining further FFs. Without treatment, 1/5 patients can go on to have a further FFs which carry significant risk to mortality and morbidity. Zoledronate is a bone agent that halves the risk of another FF. Patients with a neck of femur fracture (#NOF) present as one of the most at-risk groups for a further FF. These patients are generally elderly and frail and attendance to outpatient hospital appointments are difficult. Therefore, transforming the FLS from an out-patient-based service, to one that is streamlined to systematically identify and opportunistically treat patients whilst they are still in hospital means delivering timely, effective and efficient patient-centred care. Methods We used various Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles to aim to deliver Zoledronate to>=90% of appropriately assessed in-patients >60 who have had a #NOF within a year of commencing QIP. Results PDSA cycle 1-Involvement of ortho-geriatrician: P-Improve working relationship with ortho-geriatrician with an interest in bone health over a 6-month period;D-Regular meetings with wider MDT;S-Priority of bone health assessments made greater through ward round documentation;A-Expand knowledge throughout the wider ortho-geriatrician team. PDSA cycle 2-Timing of Zoledronate delivery: P-Literature review regarding delivery of Zoledronate timing;D-Discuss as MDT;SNo evidence to suggest delay in fracture healing if given on day 7;AAdopted process and communicated. PDSA cycle 3-FLS team on the wards as a result of PDSA cycle 2 not improving treatment outcomes: P-FLS nurses to join ortho-geriatrician ward round twice-weekly for 3- month trial period;D-Bank holidays and spike in Covid cases presented a challenge. Solution: Improvement of MDT relationships;S-At the end of the trial period an increase in patients who received treatment was shown and proved our prediction;A-Adaptation to documentation in FLS to streamline and reduce duplication. Conclusion The ability to deliver Zoledronate to>=90% of appropriate patients with a #NOF as an inpatient was reached after 8 months of initiating QIP. Furthermore, maintaining this was consistently achieved throughout the following year and beyond. A few of the main reasons for this included earlier drug delivery, having a dedicated ortho-geriatrician as part of the FLS, and the FLS team attending the wards. A prompt bone health assessment of patients has enabled appropriate treatment to be delivered efficiently. The delivery of Zoledronate as an in-patient has meant that a significantly greater proportion of patients receive treatment, and sooner, in comparison to awaiting an outpatient assessment (that they may not attend). Therefore, this QIP has demonstrated time- and cost-effective management of patients with #NOF requiring Zoledronate.

Objective: Severe disease onset of COVID-19 may result in alveolar injury and respiratory failure. Apoptosis and inflammation are the main causes of respiratory distress syndrome. Berberine is used in medicine as an analgesic, anti-asthmatic, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral. In the current investigation, the effect of berberine on COVID-19 outpatients was studied. Materials and Methods: The present clinical trial was performed on 40 outpatients who were randomly assigned to berberine (300 mg, TID, 2 weeks) (n=19) or placebo groups (n=21). Both groups received standard therapy and they were monitored on days 3, 7, and 14 after the beginning of the therapy for clinical symptoms' improvement, quantitative CRP, lymphopenia, CBC, and SpO2. The severity and frequency of these symptoms and the level of the parameters were statistically compared between the two groups. Results: On days 0, 3, 7, and 14, there was no significant difference between the berberine and placebo groups in the improvement of clinical symptoms (cough, shortness of breath, nausea, loss of smell and taste, diarrhea, dizziness, sore throat, stomachache, body aches, and body temperature), quantitative CRP, lymphopenia, WBC, neutrophils, platelets, or SpO2. Conclusion: Berberine (300 mg, TID, two weeks) is ineffective in treating COVID-19. More research with a larger sample size is needed to investigate different berberine dosages in other pharmaceutical formulations.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are complications of diabetes mellitus. COVID-19 pandemic has massively impacted human health. We studied effect of COVID-19 on outcome of DFUs. Method(s): We recruited 483 people with DFU from June 2020-April 2022 (pandemic group) together with a matched group of 227 people with DFU from March 2019-March 2020 (pre-pandemic group). Matching was done with respect to glycemic control (Average HbA1c in pandemic group 9.15%;pre-pandemic group 8.92%), and renal status. Primary endpoint was outcome of ulcers- healed or undergone amputation. Primary outcome was further sub analyzed in the 3 waves of COVID-19 Secondary endpoint was healing of individual types of DFUs. Basic anthropometric data with site, nature and Wegner's grading of DFUs were collected. Diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy was done by monofilament testing and peripheral arterial disease by handheld Doppler and ABI. Standardized treatment protocol including glycemic control, infection control, debridement, dressing, offloading was provided. All patients were monitored for >6 months. Result(s): In pandemic cohort of 483 patients 323(66.9%) patients had healed ulcers, 70(14.5%) had minor amputation, 11(2,2%) had major amputation, 29(6%) lost to follow up, 22(4.6%) had not healed and 28 are in follow up (5.8%). Rate of healing of DFU in pandemic group was higher (66.9%) than control group (53.5%). Similarly, rate of amputation in pandemic group was less (16.7%) than pre-pandemic group (23.4%). Among healed ulcers in pandemic group, non-infected neuropathic ulcers healed better (77.8%;199/256) than other types (54.6%;124/227) [p< 0.00001]. Similarly, rate of amputation (major/minor) in ischemic and neuroischemic ulcers in pandemic group was more (32.3%;11/34) than other types (15.6%;70/449) [p= 0.011]. Rate of healing of foot ulcers in 1st wave was 65.4% (53/81), 2nd wave 75.2% (158/210), 3rd wave 58.3% (112/192). Neuropathic ulcers though less prevalent in first two waves (49.8%;145/291) than 3rd wave (57.8%;111/192) healing rate was more in first two (79.3%;115/145 vs 75.6%;84/111). [p=0.488 (statistically not significant]. Ischemic and neuroischemic ulcers were more in 3rd wave (7.8%;15/192) than first two waves (6.5%;19/291) and undergone more amputation (46.7%;7/15 vs 15.7%;3/19). [p=0.58 (statistically not significant;due to small sample size]. Discussion/Conclusion: COVID-19 pandemic (mainly first two waves) accounted for travel restrictions contributing to better healing of neuropathic ulcers whereas ischemic and neuroischemic ulcers worsened and underwent more amputation as patients could not seek intervention. Conversely, in third wave withdrawal of COVID restrictions lead to worsening of DFUs leading to less healing and more amputation.Copyright © 2023

As a post-Covid-19 pandemic, many things came up with new requirements because of frequent lockdowns and social distancing constraints. Hence, many pharmaceutical industries and manufacturing units are looking for automated solutions. In the era of Industry 5.0, non-conventional machining processes are on the verge of Industry 6.0 with inclusion of artificial intelligence, deep learning and automated processes for additive or subtractive machining requirements. Non-conventional machining is in practice worldwide;however, it is required to support these kinds of manufacturing processes with remote automation, monitoring and auto-fault clearance methods. Pharmaceutical, chemical and hazardous plant handling is one of the major problems in industries throughout the world. Hence, this paper presents the automated continuous monitoring system using artificial intelligence, which can be a human machine interfacing module with a strategy to clear leakage fault automatically. This paper also discusses the various implications in conventional and non-conventional machining processes and also suggests the next generation hybrid machining system as a future scope of the research. Background: Bipolar electrocautery tonsillectomy has been the preferred technique for many otolaryngologists, yet coblation tonsillectomy is gaining popularity in the current practice. This study aims at comparing both techniques in terms of pain, bleeding, and healing. Result(s): A total of 120 patients were randomly divided into two equal groups. Overall mean pain score associated with coblation tonsillectomy was statistically less than that caused by bipolar electrocautery throughout the follow-up period (p < 0.001). The difference in pain duration was statistically longer for the bipolar group. The incidence of postoperative hemorrhage-both reactionary and secondary-was statistically higher in the bipolar group. Coblation tonsillectomy showed statistically shorter duration of healing (p < 0.001). Conclusion(s): Coblation tonsillectomy is associated with less pain severity and shorter pain duration, fewer bleeding incidents, and more prompt healing.Copyright © 2022, The Author(s).

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted healthcare, with its far-reaching effects seeping into chronic disease evaluation and treatment. Our tertiary wound care center was specially designed to deliver the highest quality care to wounded patients. Pre-pandemic, we were able to ensure rapid treatment via validated protocols delivered by a co-localized multidisciplinary team within the hospital setting. The pandemic has disrupted our model's framework, and we have worked to adapt our workflow without sacrificing quality of care. Using the modified Donabedian model of quality assessment, we present an analysis of pre- and intra-pandemic characteristics of our center. In this way, we hope other providers can use this framework for identifying evolving problems within their practice so that quality care can continue to be delivered to all patients.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Previous studies in Dutch young adults revealed that individuals with self-reported impaired wound healing reported poorer mood, increased inattention and impulsivity, poorer quality of life, and poorer immune fitness compared to healthy controls. Another study revealed that the negative impact of lockdowns during the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic was significantly more profound among the impaired wound healing group than the control group. The purpose of the current study was to replicate and extend these findings among young adults living in Germany. METHODS: A retrospective, cross-sectional survey was conducted among N = 317 young adults living in Germany, 18-35 years old. They were allocated to the IWH group (N = 66) or the control group (N-251). Participants completed the Attention Control Scale, and mood, quality of life, and immune fitness were assessed with single-item ratings. All assessments were made for (1) the period before the COVID-19 pandemic, (2) the first lockdown period, March-May 2020, (3) the first no-lockdown period, summer 2020, (4) the second lockdown, November 2020 to May 2021, and (5) the second no-lockdown period, summer 2021. RESULTS: The impaired wound healing group reported significantly poorer mood, quality of life, and immune fitness. The effects were evident before the pandemic. The impaired wound healing group scored significantly poorer on attention focusing, but no significant differences between the groups were found for attention shifting. During the pandemic, negative lockdown effects (i.e., further aggravation of mood and immune fitness and lower quality of life) were evident in both groups but significantly more profound in the impaired wound healing group. No differences between the groups were found for the no-lockdown periods. CONCLUSION: Individuals with self-reported impaired wound healing have significantly poorer mood, attention focusing, and immune fitness and report a poorer quality of life than healthy controls. The impact of COVID-19 lockdowns was significantly more profound in the impaired wound-healing group.

ABSTRACT

Nitric oxide (NO), a gaseous transmitter extensively present in the human body, regulates vascular relaxation, immune response, inflammation, neurotransmission, and other crucial functions. Nitrite donors have been used clinically to treat angina, heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, and erectile dysfunction. Based on NO's vast biological functions, it further can treat tumors, bacteria/biofilms and other infections, wound healing, eye diseases, and osteoporosis. However, delivering NO is challenging due to uncontrolled blood circulation release and a half-life of under five seconds. With advanced biotechnology and the development of nanomedicine, NO donors packaged with multifunctional nanocarriers by physically embedding or chemically conjugating have been reported to show improved therapeutic efficacy and reduced side effects. Herein, we review and discuss recent applications of NO nanomedicines, their therapeutic mechanisms, and the challenges of NO nanomedicines for future scientific studies and clinical applications. As NO enables the inhibition of the replication of DNA and RNA in infectious microbes, including COVID-19 coronaviruses and malaria parasites, we highlight the potential of NO nanomedicines for antipandemic efforts. This review aims to provide deep insights and practical hints into design strategies and applications of NO nanomedicines.
